Summary
Louis prides
himself on being a fun dad, but after he has an accident and is forced to stay
home with the boys, he scrambles to find ways to entertain the kids. And while
Louis is stuck at home, Jessica struggles to manage the staff and the new
takeout service at Cattleman's Ranch.
Application of OB Concept: Theory X and Theory Y Managers
Louis and
Jessica are the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to the way they
manage their business and even their family. Jessica is more of a Theory X
manager which makes her stricter to her children and the employees of their
restaurant. In this episode, Jessica was mad at Louis for telling their
employees that, per their agreement, she cannot fire anyone. Her main concern was her ability to threaten
them with losing their jobs so they would do as she says. She compares their
employees to goldfish who only knows how to gape and swallow air. On the other
hand, Louis believes that the work in the restaurant should not be that
serious. He knows that as manager, his only job is to supervise his employees
and not dictate their every move. Louis is a Theory Y manager that believes
that his employees are not inherently lazy.
Reflection
I
get where Jessica and Louis are both coming from. All they want is for their employees
to be efficient in the workplace. However, the difference on their assumptions
as to whether their employees are inherently motivated to their jobs or not,
dictates all the difference in the way they treat them. Personally, I would
prefer a manager like Louis who will believe that I will do my job well without
the need for threatening me for punishments.
